10 Step Korean Skin Care Routine Vs Western Skin Care Routine
The Western approach to skin care aims to fix a problem after it has already occurred, whereas the Korean method is focused on prevention. Many Western products contain harsh chemicals, whereas Korean products are based on natural plant extracts. The goal of the Korean skin care routine is to maintain healthy skin and avoid any major skin problems.
The Korean skin care routine is very disciplined. Korean skin care products include ingredients that follow the rules of eastern medicine; they heal, regenerate, and nourish. In Eastern cultures, food is medicine, and this also applies to skin care. The Korean skin care routine layers products and the most widely known Korean skin care routine involves 10 steps.
To Western and European women, this may sound like a lot of work. But given that most steps take only a few seconds, it is not too time-consuming. Many people have tried and tested the routine for 4 weeks and have seen visible improvements in their skin.
10 Step Korean Skin Care Routine Explained:
STEP 1: OIL CLEANSER
How: Apply an oil-based cleanser to dry skin, massage in and wipe off with tissue, cotton balls or soft face cloth.
Why: An oil-based cleanser will gently remove all oil based products like sunscreen, make up and oil.
STEP 2: WATER CLEANSE
How: Apply water, cream or foam-based cleanser onto the skin. Massage in. Wipe your face with a tissue, cotton balls, or a soft face cloth and rinse.
Why: Double cleansing is standard in a salon facial. Water-based cleansers remove all remaining traces of dirt and impurities and the oil-based cleanser. A double cleanse will leave your skin feeling cleaner than ever.
STEP 3: EXFOLIATE
How: Apply the product to your face and gently rub in circular motions. Add water to emulsify. Rinse off. You can use either an exfoliating wipe, grainy scrub or peeling gel.
Why: Exfoliation sloughs off dead skin cells and removes the dull top layer of skin. Regular exfoliation encourages skin cell turnover, which makes your skin look fresher and dewier. Oily/combination skin types can gently exfoliate 2 times per week, while sensitive skin types should only exfoliate 1 time per week. Be gentle with your skin!
STEP 4: TONER
How: Apply toner to a cotton ball or palms and press and pat onto your face.
Why: Western and European women often skip toner, but toner is an important step in any beauty routine. In K Beauty toner preps the skin for the rest of the products.
STEP 5: ESSENCE
How: Apply to your fingertips and pat and press onto your face, being careful not to rub.
Why: Essences are waterier than creams or serums and are easily absorbed. They are key to the Korean beauty routine, as they can treat a variety of different skin care concerns.
STEP 6: SERUM
How: Apply to fingertips or into palms and pat and press onto your face. Do not rub.
Why: It is another layer to provide moisture and treat a specific skin care concern.
STEP 7: MASK SHEET
How: Apply the sheet to your face and relax. Read the instructions on the packet to see the recommended time that you need to leave the sheet on your face, but it is usually around 20 minutes. Do not rinse off, press and pat serum into the skin.
Why: Masks can treat specific skin care concerns and problems, such as brightening, hydration, moisturizing, or treating acne. If your skin is in need of moisture you can use a mask everyday or you can do a mask once a week.
STEP 8: EYE CREAM
How: Apply to skin under the eye. Do not apply near the lash line. Gently pat and press the cream in. Do not rub and do not pull or tug your skin.
Why: Skin under the eye is more delicate than the rest of the face. A dedicated cream can treat specific concerns like dark circles, wrinkles, and puffiness.
STEP 9: FACE CREAM
How: Apply to fingertips or palms and gently pat and press onto the face. Do not rub or pull your skin.
Why: This step locks in the moisture from the previous product layers. Do not worry that you have too much on your skin, your skin will absorb it and is going to look and feel amazing.
STEP 10: SUNSCREEN
How: Apply to fingertips or palms and gently pat onto the face over the previous layers.
Why: Sunscreen will protect your skin when exposed to the sun and help to stop sun damage. Sun damaged makes your face look older. Always apply sunscreen over your face cream and under your makeup. And if possible, get a foundation or powder with SPF in it.
Note:
I cannot recommend using a face cream that has sunscreen in it, because the molecules in face and eye cream are smaller than sunscreen molecules. The molecules in face creams are designed to be absorbed into the skin to provide moisture. Sunscreen molecules are designed to sit on top of the skin’s surface to help deflect damaging UV light.
Therefore, using a separate face moisturizer and sunscreen provides better sun protection.
