How Do I Treat Dry Skin On Face?
1. Cleanse Morning and Night
Use a gentle, low pH, non-foaming, alcohol-free, cleanser on your face morning and night.
A low pH cleanser (pH4. 5-5) will clean your skin without weakening your natural skin barrier. Choose a cleanser that contains moisturising ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Ceramide, Squalene, Rice oil, and Jojoba oil. This will your skin retain its natural moisture.
2. Take Warm Baths & Showers, Not Hot
Hot water can dry out, irritate, and inflame the skin, which causes causing flakiness, itching, and redness.
It can also strip the skin of natural oils, proteins, and fats, which are necessary to keep your skin healthy.
3. Apply Essences, Serums, and Moisturizer While the Skin Is Still Damp
When you completely dry the skin after showering it removes necessary moisture.
Moisturizers work best when applied to damp skin. The aim is to seal in moisture while the skin is still damp.
4. Choose Products That Help Keep Skin Moisturised
Look for products that help to hydrate, smooth, and improve the skin barrier. The following ingredients are very good for dry skin.
Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant, meaning, it helps the skin hold onto water and attracts moisture towards it, acting like a sponge.
Beta-glucan is extremely hydrating and is good for skin that has a compromised skin barrier. It calms irritations and deeply penetrates the skin layers.
Ceramides aid in moisturising and strengthening the skin barrier and protect help to protect the skin.
Squalene has emollient properties and is easily absorbed and prevents water loss from the skin.
Rice Bran oil softens, soothes, nourishes, and moisturizes skin and is suitable even for oily skin types.
Jojoba oil is a humectant and contains fatty acids, which are beneficial to skin. It attracts water to the top layer of skin, which helps hydrate the skin. It also has anti-inflammatory properties.
Dimethicone is noncomedogenic and won’t clog your pores it also has skin-smoothing properties.
Glycerin is a humectant, that draws water to the outer layer of the skin from the air and internally from the deeper layers of the skin.
Snail Mucin has hydrating properties and promotes collagen production. It also aids in skin healing and skin regeneration.

5. Exfoliate Gently
It is important to exfoliate dry skin.
Avoid mechanical exfoliation on dry skin, as it can be detrimental to already dry skin and damage the outer layer of skin.
Note: Mechanical exfoliation is when you use a scrub or peeling pad to rub/massage the skin to remove the dead skin cells. Mechanical exfoliation is also done by dermaplaning and microdermabrasion.
If your skin is constantly dry and/or sensitive and irritated, it will be better to use an Alpha Hydroxy Acid exfoliant, like Glycolic Acid.
Glycolic Acid is made from sugar cane and is well tolerated on dry skin types. It has the smallest size molecule of all Alpha Hydroxy Acids and can penetrate the skin.
It works by dissolving the bond that holds skin cells together, allowing the skin cells to shed.
This creates a peeling effect and eliminates the dry, dead skin cells on the outer layer of the skin.
It also stimulates Collagen production.
When using any AHA product it is important to read the directions and understand how often the product should be used. Products that have a low concentration of AHA’s can be used daily, but very high levels of AHA’s should be used less, treat them as a fortnightly or monthly treatment.
So, make sure you understand how often you should apply your chosen AHA product/s.
6. Try Slugging
Slugging is simply the application of an occlusive skincare product that acts as a barrier to seal in moisture. Occlusives work by creating a protective barrier on the surface of the skin that prevents moisture loss. Trapping in moisture is an effective way t get rid of dry skin on face.
Sugging is done as the last step in your skincare routine, and is best done at night.
Slugging skin care products are thicker and heavier than regular moisturisers. Vaseline can be used as a slugging product, as can Pyunkang Yul’s Balancing Gel, which also contains wonderful hydrating ingredients.
Remember, that when you add new products to your skin care routine you need to allow at least 28 days to see true results.
Exfoliation removes the dead skin cells from the surface layer of the skin, which is called the Epidermis. The Epidermis cells turn over, meaning new cells will come to the surface.
Exfoliation helps this process and boosts the cell turnover rate.
The rate of skin cell turn over in teenagers is approximately 28 days. In middle-aged people, it is approximately 28-42 days. And for the over 50s, it can take up to 84 days, so you do need to allow time to see how your skin is improving.
